Cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) is an important food crop in the tropics. It is widely used in droughtprone climates, but little is known about the efffects of water deficit on cassava development. The objectives of this work were to study the effects of water stress on cassava leaf development and the extent to which decreases in cell division and expansion are responsible for inhibition of cassava leaf development during water deficit. Cassava plants were submitted to 8 days of water deficit (30% from field capacity) followed by rewatering. To evaluate the water deficit response with respect to leaf area growth, leaves at 15 nodal positions, representing several developmental stages from expanding to meristematic, were sampled at 2-day intervals during stress and recovery. |
